Peru: Police assists Canadian tourist after suffering health problems in Huayhuash

The Canadian tourist who activated a satellite alert while in the Huayhuash Mountain Range, Ancash region, was assisted by rescue teams from the Peruvian National Police and members of the Socorro Andino mountain rescue group after experiencing health problems during her stay in this high-altitude area.

Ancash Police Region Chief General Eduan Diaz reported that the foreign tourist was not lost but had reported an emergency due to health problems.

In response to the situation, arrangements were made to deploy specialized personnel aimed at providing assistance and completing her evacuation.

The police also arranged for a helicopter to assist in transporting the tourist.

However, the aircraft was unable to approach the emergency area due to adverse weather conditions, particularly because of strong winds in the zone.

Unable to carry out the evacuation by air, the rescue teams reached the tourist, provided her with assistance, and transported her by land to La Union, where she received initial medical care.

Subsequently, the tourist was taken to Huaraz for further evaluation and medical care.

According to information provided by the police, her health condition is stable.

The emergency was reported after the foreign tourist, who was at an altitude of about 4,800 meters above sea level, activated a satellite alert to request assistance.

The operation mobilized Socorro Andino volunteers and police rescuers, who faced the challenges posed by the terrain and weather conditions in the Huayhuash Mountain Range.
