Peru PM informs congressional commissions of COVID-19 measures

19:30 | Lima, Apr. 28.

Peru's Prime Minister Vicente Zeballos on Tuesday reported on the COVID-19 prevention, protection, and control actions undertaken by the Executive Branch.

"The current critical scenario has led the Government to take health, economy, production, and security-related measures, among others. All these decisions were based on medical-scientific criteria," he said, noting that if social immobilization measures had not been taken, the situation would be unmanageable now.

Moreover, Zeballos explained that the multisectoral commission —led by the Presidency of the Council of Ministers (PCM) and made up of different sectors— was established to provide a rapid response to the country's needs, in light of the dynamic nature of the coronavirus.

According to the Cabinet chief, three working groups were formed thanks to the multisectoral commission.

The first group was the crisis committee, which is responsible for the repatriation of Peruvians stranded abroad.

Likewise, there is a commission responsible for ensuring the care of native communities, which is made up of Ministers Sonia Guillen (Culture) and Ariela Luna (Development and Social Inclusion).

The third commission monitors the movement of people from one region to another, which is made up of Ministers Fabiola Muñoz (Environment) and Gloria Montenegro (Women and Vulnerable Populations).

Furthermore, the President of the Council of Ministers reported that the 2020 budget will be revised in order to prioritize expenses and, thus, be able to observe the decisions that are being made.
