Peru hits historic mining export level at US$7.277 billion in Jan 2026

Peru's mining exports reached US$7.277 billion in January 2026, marking a 56.8% year-on-year increase, the Ministry of Energy and Mines (Minem) reported on Tuesday.

This result marks a historically high level, driven primarily by the strong performance of metallic products, which totaled US$7.216 billion and maintained a dominant share of total exports.

According to Minem's Mining Statistical Bulletin, this 56.8% year-on-year growth was driven by a significant increase in the export value of key minerals such as copper, gold, and lead.

This momentum is mainly explained by rising international prices, in a context of financial uncertainty and geopolitical tensions, factors that boosted demand for safe-haven assets such as gold.

Thus, Peru's mining sector continues to reaffirm its role as one of the external sector's fundamental pillars.

Metallic products maintained a clearly predominant position, accounting for 73.2% of the mining export value, while non-metallic minerals recorded a 0.6% share.

This configuration reflects strong demand for metals that are increasingly central to the global energy mix and large-scale industrial processes, in a context of an unprecedented energy transition.

Likewise, the structure of mining exports remains highly concentrated in a small group of products, led by copper and gold, followed by lead and zinc, reflecting Peru's specialization in metallic minerals within international trade.

Additionally, the recent performance of exports was supported by increased export volumes of minerals such as zinc, lead, and iron, driven by sustained international demand linked to industrial processes and the development of technologies associated with the energy transition.

According to Minem, the mining export results show that this activity remains key to the country's development, given its significant contribution to foreign currency generation and trade balance stability, accounting for 73.8% of total Peruvian shipments during the first month of 2026.
