Peru: Head of State elected President of Justice Reform Council

15:20 | Lima, May. 27.

Peru's Head of the State Martin Vizcarra was elected President of the Council for Justice Reform, during a meeting held Monday at the Government Palace in Lima.

The committee's tasks are: promoting the justice system reform; tracking and assessing the progress made on this process; and presenting an annual report on its progress to the public.

The creation of this mechanism was proposed by the Executive Branch as part of the justice reform promoted after the release of some audios that revealed corruption among members of the Judicial Power, Public Ministry, and deactivated National Council of Magistracy (CNM), which led to a scandal.

The Council for Justice Reform is composed of the Heads of the Judiciary, Congress, Public Ministry, Constitutional Court, Comptroller General's Office, Ombudsman, Presidency of the Republic, and National Justice Board (JNJ).

The top official informed that the decision to lead the committee was adopted by consensus among the seven institutions part of this body, as the JNJ has not taken office yet.

Within this framework, the statesman indicated that he has a 90-day deadline to issue a national policy document on justice.

"Last year, we said we were going to initiate the reform of the justice administration system. We are on that path," the top official expressed.
