Prime Minister Alberto Otarola stressed that the Peruvian Government seeks to create a space for dialogue among six countries, in order to find solutions to the migration issue in South America.

"We have made progress in establishing dialogue with other countries, because this is a problem that many countries have been facing for a long time," he said in statements to the press.

According to Otarola, in addition to Chile and Peru, said dialogue should include Ecuador, Colombia, Bolivia, and Venezuela.

Regarding the situation at the southern border with Chile, the Cabinet chief noted that both Peruvian and Chilean authorities are working to improve the flow of migrants at the common border.

Likewise, he explained that the Peruvian National Police (PNP) has been implementing a special migration control service in regions across the country and in Lima, to prevent organized criminal gangs from continuing to affect the security of Peruvians.

Likewise, the head of the Ministerial Cabinet reaffirmed that the Peruvian Government works with the Regional Government of Tacna and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to provide humanitarian assistance to these people.

Compliance with regulations

Moreover, Otarola remarked that the extraordinary session of the Council of Ministers, held on Saturday, addressed compliance with the recently issued regulations on migration.

Said regulations include the declaration of a state of emergency in bordering areas, as well as rules to prevent foreigners who lack the required documentation from entering the country.

The Prime Minister affirmed that said measures are aimed at strengthening police surveillance, with the support of the Armed Forces, in the jurisdictions bordering neighboring countries.

In addition, he emphasized that foreigners who are currently in an irregular situation have six months to register and regularize their immigration status.
