The
Presidency of the Council of Ministers (PCM) on Monday commemorated the 141st anniversary of the Battle of Arica, which was officially declared the Day of Renewal of the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag, as established in 1905.
Via Twitter, the Government noted that this is a particularly important date "to come together as a country and overcome the pandemic together."
Today, as every year on June 7 for 141 years now, Peru celebrates the Flag Day, which was established on April 30, 1924, by a supreme decree enacted by the Government of Augusto Leguia, who reigned for 11 years, between 1919 and 1930.
The Battle of Arica took place on June 7, 1880, within the framework of the War of the Pacific that pitted Peru against Chile, and in which Chile took over the city of Arica.
It is worth noting the fact that Colonel Alfonso Ugarte jumped off the cliff down into the ocean to prevent the capture of the Peruvian flag by Chilean forces.
June 7 celebrations commemorate the determination of soldiers who did not surrender and fought in defense of their ideals and the country.
