Peru: Government to boost Cusco-Machu Picchu-Choquequirao tourist circuit

14:15 | Lima, Apr. 3.

The Peruvian Government expects to boost the Cusco-Machu Picchu-Choquequirao tourist circuit, as part of a revival strategy aimed at tourism, one of the sectors most affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, Prime Minister Gustavo Adrianzen affirmed on Wednesday.

The high-ranking official arrived at Congress headquarters this morning to present and support the Government General Policy.

The Prime Minister indicated that the boost to this tourist circuit will lead to consolidating the destination —one of the country's most important— and alleviate the tourist demand for Machu Picchu, "offering an alternative that enables tourists to extend their stay," he underlined.

In that sense, Adrianzen affirmed the goal towards 2025 is to award the (Choquequirao Cable Car) project, "which, once in operation, will manage to gradually serve up to one million new visitors to the Choquequirao Archaeological Monument," he detailed.

The Cabinet chief indicated that domestic tourism promotion will be invigorated so as to accelerate the recovery of domestic trips and tourist destinations.

"Therefore, it (the Government) expects to exceed 7 million of people (visitors) thanks to promotion campaigns, the generation of revenue from fairs and business rounds, and the transportation of 1.3 million passengers through strategic alliances with the private sector," he expressed.

Tourism infrastructure

The Prime Minister affirmed that, in order to contribute to enhancing the conditions and supporting visits by tourists, within the framework of the Economic Reactivation through the Copesco Plan, an investment worth over S/42 billion (about US$11.351 billion) is projected for the current year.

He added those resources will be allocated to tourism infrastructure in nine Peruvian regions, such as Arequipa, Ayacucho, Cusco, Junin, Lambayeque, La Libertad, Cajamarca, Huanuco, and Ica.

The Copesco Plan is in charge of formulating, coordinating, guiding, executing, supervising, and providing technical assistance specialized in investment projects linked to tourism infrastructure in regions.
