The Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Monday evening issued an official statement on the Peruvian Government's decision to break off diplomatic ties with Mexico.

Below is the full statement:

"As is well known to the public, since former President Castillo's failed attempt at a coup (on December 7, 2022), the Government of Mexico has been improperly and systematically interfering in Peru's internal affairs, in clear violation of the non-intervention principle recognized under international law. This recurring behavior is inconsistent with the historic and fraternal relationship that has existed between the two countries."

"The unacceptable stance taken by Mexico since December 2022 remained unchanged, despite the Government of Peru repeatedly demanding respect for its sovereignty and the principle of non-intervention in internal affairs."

"In an unfriendly act that adds to a series of unacceptable interference actions by the Mexican Government toward Peru, said country's Embassy in Lima has announced today (Monday) that its government has granted diplomatic asylum to Ms. Betssy Chavez Chino."

"This event proves the Mexican Government's profound lack of interest in maintaining a relationship with Peru."

"Consequently, the Government of the Republic of Peru has decided to break off diplomatic relations with the United Mexican States."

"Peru a democratic State governed by the rule of law and acting in strict accordance with international law— will consistently handle the present situation in accordance with the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations and other relevant international rules."
