Peruvian Foreign Affairs Minister Ana Cecilia Gervasi held an audience with
Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) High-level Mission members at Torre Tagle Palace in the capital city, Lima, on Wednesday.
At the meeting, the Cabinet member reiterated the commitment of Peru and the Peruvian Government to respect and promote human rights, which are fundamental pillars of democracy, and to strengthen governability.
Likewise, the diplomat reaffirmed that Peru guarantees the free exercise of the right to peaceful protest, differentiating it from its use to commit acts of violence against the democratic order and the rule of law.
The IACHR's visit takes place from January 11 to 13 and aims to monitor the human rights situation in the context of social protests. The delegation plans to visit Lima and other cities across the country.
The Commission will meet with public authorities, civil society organizations, and other relevant actors.
As a result of the visit, in the exercise of its functions, the IACHR plans to publish its observations, conclusions, and recommendations to the Peruvian State.
