Peru: Economic subsidy to be extended to around 800,000 independent workers

A group of around 800,000 independent worker households will each benefit from the exceptional bonus of S/380 (about US$107) that the Peruvian Government provides for vulnerable populations to overcome the current COVID-19 health emergency, President Martin Vizcarra affirmed on Thursday.

The Head of State said there are families who require the economic support but had not been included in the initial registry of vulnerable families.

Thus, independent workers —a part of the informal workers sector— join the 2.7 million that were identified through the poverty and extreme poverty registry.

"We are now preparing the specific registry, and it will be a transfer to be channeled through the Ministry of Labor," he added.

President Vizcarra estimated that the bonus for this group of independent or informal workers will represent an approximate transfer of S/300 million (about US$84.50 million).

Remarks were made in a televised Address to the Nation, within the framework of a mandatory social isolation imposed to prevent the COVID-19 from further spreading in the South American country.

Initially set to last from March 16 to 30, the measure has been extended thru April 12.

On this occasion, the President was joined by members of the Council of Ministers and other authorities. The event was held at the Government Palace in Lima.

Thursday marks the eleventh day of mandatory social isolation.
