A team of Peruvian developers implemented the Monitoring System for COVID-19 Patients, who were treated in the emergency area of Lima-based Cayetano Heredia Hospital and then returned home.

The platform consists of a chatbot service, which is integrated with medical care via WhatsApp, text messages (SMS) and a virtual IP exchange over the Internet for phone calls to suspected COVID-19 patients who are under isolation at their place of residence.

Supported by artificial intelligence, the aim is to reduce the burden of patients in hospitals' triage areas.

How does it work?

The system developed by the Peruvian company MDP Consulting —which previously became the winner of the InnovaCovid19 Challenge award granted by the State-run Innovate Peru— connects with a bot that asks questions to each patient about his/her symptoms.

The telemonitoring service is only for patients with lower risk who were not able to access COVID-19 tests as they had mild symptoms or did not belong to any high-risk group composed of people with diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity, cancer or chronic lung disease.

The questions were validated by infectious disease doctors and epidemiologists from Cayetano Heredia Hospital and the Alexander Von Humboldt Institute of Tropical Medicine.

If the chatbot detects any risky situation —based on the patient's responses— it will refer him/her to monitoring via phone so that a doctor can assist them.

The phone attention is in charge of doctors from Cayetano Heredia Hospital, who are working from home because they belong to a group at high risk of COVID-19 contagion.

Through an appointment made via teleconference, health personnel will be able to monitor the health status and thus make the timely detection of complications that may require emergency care or hospitalization.

Independent developers also participated in the development of the system, as did staff from IBM, Wildix, Huawei and Movistar Empresas.
