Peru: Deadline to register final 2026 Election Candidacies is Nov. 7

11:56 | Lima, Nov. 6.

The National Office of Electoral Processes (ONPE) reminded citizens that the deadline for the electoral bodies of political organizations to submit their final candidacies and the positions they will run for in the primary elections will expire on November 7, 2025.

According to the Regulations for Political Organizations' Primary Elections linked to the 2026 General Elections, the central electoral bodies (OEC for its Spanish acronym) are in charge of sending this information digitally to the ONPE.

The electoral authority clarified that if an organization does not submit its candidacies within the established deadline, it will not be allowed to participate in the primary elections.

Likewise, the OEC must ensure that the candidacies meet all legal requirements and that the candidates have no impediments to holding public office.

Internal procedure

Political organizations are responsible for defining their internal procedures for submitting candidacies, always within the current legal framework.

The positions subject to primary elections include the presidential ticket (president and two vice-presidents), senators for single-member and multi-member districts, deputies for multi-member districts, and representatives to the Andean Parliament.

Internal election methods

In the upcoming elections, 37 political organizations (34 parties and 3 alliances) will opt for the delegate method.

Meanwhile, two political parties, the Peruvian Aprista Party and Renovación Popular (Popular Renewal), will hold their internal elections through the universal, free, voluntary, equal, direct, and secret vote of their affiliates.

As is known, the General Elections will be held on April 12, 2026, with a potential runoff for the presidential race scheduled for June 7 of the same year.
