Peru: Cusco reports highest number of deaths due to COVID-19 in less than 24 hours

The latest situational report —issued on Wednesday morning— indicates that Cusco region has recorded the highest number of deaths due to COVID-19 in less than 24 hours.

According to the statistics, deaths in said region have amounted to 470 so far this year.

The accumulated amount of infected people is 14,056, and 435 were confirmed in one day, 309 of whom are active and remain contagious. 

In addition, there are 348 hospitalized patients in COVID-19 wards and there are no beds available in intensive care units (ICU) at hospitals.

The provinces with the most deaths and confirmed cases of infection are Cusco, La Convencion, and Canchis. 

On the other hand, the region has registered a total of 3,703 hospital discharges and 9,769 epidemiological discharges.

Immediate action

In light of these figures, the Regional Health Management Office (Geresa) recommended that COVID-19 patients with low oxygen saturation (less than 87%) go immediately to a health center or hospital to receive oxygen and prevent death.

Geresa-Cusco Manager Juan Alberto Spelucin affirmed that using an oximeter or pulse oximeter is the most practical way to keep track of oxygen levels at home.
