A new cryogenic oxygen plant —which works as a gaseous oxygen generator— will join the fight against COVID-19 in La Libertad region, the Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC) reported on Tuesday.

The equipment, which arrived at Callao Port this morning, was imported from India by the Pan American and Parapan American Games Special Legacy Project —a body attached to the MTC.

It has the capacity to produce 170 cubic meters of medical oxygen per hour and is capable of filling between 350 and 400 cylinders —of 10 cubic meters each— per day.

Speaking from a warehouse in Callao, where the equipment was received, Prime Minister Violeta Bermudez, Transport and Communications Minister Eduardo Gonzalez, and Executive-Director of the Pan American and Parapan American Games Special Legacy Project Alberto Valenzuela reported on this and other initiatives to bridge the oxygen gap in the country.

"This cryogenic plant was absolutely required by authorities and citizens in La Libertad. Said region had no oxygen plants when the pandemic began. Today, there are 14, and, thus, Pacasmayo will have an oxygen generator," the MTC's head remarked.

This cryogenic plant —which was manufactured using Italian technology— taps atmospheric air to be distilled and purified. Then, medical oxygen is obtained through a cooling process with compression and decompression methods.

As stipulated by the Ministry of Health (Minsa), the plant will be located at the fairground site in the city of Pacasmayo.

Seven other cryogenic plants-oxygen generators are due to be imported. They will be implemented gradually, with the regions of Arequipa, Cajamarca, Huanuco, and Loreto first in line.

Additionally, a PSA-type plant —imported from France— will be delivered in La Libertad in the coming days. It has the capacity to produce 20 cubic meters of oxygen per hour.
