Peru: COVID-19 isolation facility opened in Ventanilla

18:03 | Callao (Callao region), Jun. 19.

The Regional Government of Callao on Friday opened the first temporary containment and isolation center for COVID-19 patients at the Sports Village in Ventanilla district.

The facility —which is able to accommodate 72 beds— was inaugurated by Callao Region Governor Dante Mandriotti, Callao Regional Health Directorate (Diresa) Head Kathey Pacheco, and Ventanilla Deputy Mayor Cesar Perez.

Mandriotti noted that the center is aimed at mild and moderate cases with risk factors associated with coronavirus complications or pre-existing illnesses such as hypertension, chronic kidney failure, diabetes, among others.

According to the governor, the primary care service is part of the plan for strengthening health and containment services amid COVID-19 in Callao region.

He also announced that a second isolation center —with capacity for up to 165 beds— will be inaugurated soon at the Regional Sports Village.

"From now on, this isolation center is at the service of Callao residents to reduce the current high rates of infection," the region's top authority stated.

On the matter, Kathey Pacheco explained that the isolation center is not a COVID-19 hospital, but a quarantine center, "an establishment for COVID-19 patients to avoid infecting relatives, friends, and spreading the disease."

According to Pacheco, those who need to be isolated will be taken to the isolation center to break the virus transmission chain if the rapid response teams visiting homes deem it necessary.

Finally, she underscored that if patients develop complications, they will be administered oxygen, but if this condition persists, they will be taken to one of the COVID-19 hospitals in Callao region.
