Former Prime Minister Betssy Chavez on Thursday afternoon was transferred to Chorrillos Women's Prison from the jail of Ancon I Prison, both in Lima, where she will serve an 18-month pre-trial custody sentence.

Chavez is investigated for the alleged crimes of rebellion and conspiracy for her participation in the failed coup carried out by former President Pedro Castillo on December 7, 2022.

On Wednesday, the former congresswoman was transferred to Lima in a small plane operated by the Peruvian National Police (PNP) in order to attend the identity control hearing conducted by Judge Juan Carlos Checkley.

Earlier that day, the defendant underwent a medical examination a few hours after she was arrested in the city of Tacna.

Chavez's lawyer, Erwin Siccha, said that the defense will request the ex-Prime Minister serve her pre-trial custody sentence in Tacna.

Additionally, Siccha underscored that the transfer to Lima from Tacna is a routine procedure.

Attorney's previous statements

After Chavez's capture, Siccha told RPP Noticias that the defense found the decision of pre-trial detention unfair and disproportional, due to the convincing evidence presented at the hearings.

"The Judiciary has issued the order. We believe that it is an unfair and disproportional decision, also because there is convincing evidence that refutes the Public Ministry's claim," he said.

However, the attorney affirmed that they will abide by the decision and will make use of the corresponding legal mechanisms to reverse it.
