Judiciary and police authorities have started the transfer of Peru's former Prime Minister Betssy Chavez, from the southern city of Tacna to the Peruvian capital Lima, to serve an 18-month pre-trial custody sentence.

Chavez left the Judiciary's detention facilities in Tacna in a police vehicle and headed to Carlos Ciriani International Airport located in said city.

Last Tuesday, the ex-Cabinet chief was arrested by members of the Peruvian National Police (PNP), who came to her home in the city of Tacna, after the Judiciary issued an immediate arrest warrant for her.

This measure was authorized by Judge Cesar San Martin, amid an investigation into Chavez for the alleged crime of rebellion, along with ex-Ministers Willy Huerta and Roberto Sanchez.

The Permanent Criminal Chamber of the Supreme Court, chaired by San Martin, declared the appeal of the Prosecutor's Office against Chavez —who was facing the process under appearance with restrictions— well-founded.

The defense team had requested that the ex-Prime Minister serve her pre-trial custody sentence in Tacna, but such request was denied, so she will have to comply with this measure in Lima.
