Peru backs just and sustainable long-term energy transition

16:00 | Panama City (Panama), Oct. 26.

Environment Minister Albina Ruiz on Thursday reaffirmed Peru's commitment to promoting a transition to clean energies in order to contribute to the planet's protection.

Her remarks were made during her participation at the Ministerial High Level Segment - Delivery of Statements on Just Transition and Energy, which took place as part of the Latin America and the Caribbean Climate Week 2023 held in Panama.

Moreover, the Peruvian government official affirmed that the country is working on a just and sustainable energy transition that addresses both mitigation and adaptation of climate change.

"We are called to get climate actions involved in environmental, social, and economic aspects, and to ensure that all voices are heard, especially those of the youth and women, including the most vulnerable ones, as well as rural and indigenous women," she underlined.

Afterwards, Ruiz referred to the increase of deforestation, as well as illicit activities such as illegal mining, land trafficking, and drug trafficking.

"Peru is working on the creation of a climate fund for the benefit of indigenous women, in order to promote their incorporation in the just transition, giving it a female face," she remarked.

"This will help strengthen capacities of nearly 3 million indigenous women in the implementation of adaptation and mitigation. In addition, we will present it during the climate summit COP28," the minister added.

Renewable energy

Furthermore, the Cabinet member cited as an example of just transition the use of photovoltaic energy in the cold chain for aquaculture in the community of Kandozi in Loreto region, a remote area of the Peruvian Amazon without energy access.

"I call on all sister countries in the region to replicate and scale experiences like these, which allow us to promote the use of renewable energies and contribute to the well-being of people," she said.
