The Judicial Branch on Wednesday
He is currently being held at Barbadillo Prison in Lima's Ate district.
The sentence in the Ecoteva case was issued by the Ninth Criminal Liquidating Chamber of the Lima Court this afternoon.
Toledo Manrique participated virtually in the hearing, along with co-defendants Avi and Shai Dan On, and representatives from the Public Ministry and the State Attorney’s Office.
The late businessman, Josef Maiman, confirmed through the plea bargain mechanism that the deposited money derived from bribes paid to Toledo while he was president, and not from a pension that Eva Fernenbug —the former president's mother-in-law— used to receive as a victim of the Jewish Holocaust, as he had initially claimed.
Reading of the sentence
According to the
latest ruling, it has been proven that the former president, taking advantage of his high position in the Executive Branch, conspired with a representative of the Brazilian company Odebrecht.
They secured the awarding of the Interoceanic Highway in exchange for financial payments made through companies established abroad.
These payments were later transferred and entered into the banking system, appearing to be legitimate, to be used for the purchase and mortgage payments of the properties involved in the case.
It is worth noting that among the properties acquired are a house in Las Casuarinas upper-class neighborhood and an office in the Omega building, both located in Lima's Surco district.
Additionally, the mortgage for Toledo's residence in Punta Sal was paid off through the offshore company established in Costa Rica.
The sentence in the Ecoteva case will be enforced, and calculated from October 17, 2024, the date on which the United States approved the extension of the extradition request against Toledo for the crime of money laundering.
