Former President of the Republic, Alejandro Toledo Manrique, was on Monday afternoon
sentenced to 20 years and 6 months in prison after being found responsible for the crimes of aggravated collusion and money laundering in the Interoceanic Highway case, stretches 2 and 3.
"This collegiate body, taking into account the arguments of the Public Ministry representative, likewise, since it is public knowledge that Mr. Alejandro Toledo Manrique held the highest position within Peru's public administration, it assumes the request made by the representative of the Public Ministry," Second National Collegiate Criminal Court Judge Ines Rojas stated.
According to the advanced ruling, the former president was sentenced to 9 years of imprisonment and 3 years of disqualification for the crime of collusion.
For the crime of money laundering, he was sentenced to 11 years and 6 months of imprisonment, plus 242-day fine.
The verdict states that Toledo Manrique colluded with interested parties such as Odebrecht so that, through a US$35 million bribe, the Brazilian company was awarded the contract for the construction of the Southern Interoceanic Highway's stretches 2 and 3, causing harm to the Peruvian State.
Furthermore, the court imposed 9-year imprisonment on the grounds of collusion on former Proinversion committee members Sergio Bravo Orellana and Alberto Javier Pasco-Font Quevedo, who with their conduct validated the illegal act promoted by Toledo Manrique.
Meanwhile, businessman Jose Fernando Castillo Dibos was sentenced to 14 years and 6 months in prison for the crimes of collusion and money laundering.
In this same case, the court acquitted Toledo's former security chief, Avraham Dan On, as an accomplice to the crime of collusion in this case.
The court also established S/1.375 billion (about US$366 million), plus US$463 million, as civil compensation to be paid by those found guilty in the proceedings.
Judge Ines Rojas Contreras reported that the verdict in the Interoceanic Highway case, stretches 2 and 3, will be entirely read on October 31 at 10:00 a.m. (local time).
