During the current month, the Health Ministry (Minsa) received 8,625,600 doses which were distributed nationwide and allowed the Peruvian State to continue with the vaccination process against COVID-19 so as to allow the highest number of people to be protected before a possible third pandemic wave.

Of the total amount of vaccines that arrived at Jorge Chavez International Airport in Callao region, 6,435,000 doses came from Pfizer and 2,190,600 from AstraZeneca.

Vaccines for 2022

"These vaccines are the ones that have shown greater efficacy in the face of the variants that are appearing, such as Omicron," the Cabinet member said at the time.

The objective is to increase protection against the presence of the Omicron variant in Peru, whose contagion speed —according to preliminary studies— is higher compared to other strains of SARS-CoV-2.

"We have secured more than 7,400,000 doses which will arrive in the first fortnight of January 2022 for children aged 5 to 11 years old; it is a population of 3,700,000 children," he indicated, adding that the Health Ministry intends to ensure the safe return to in-person classes.

However, he urged citizens to continue complying with biosafety measures such as: wearing double face mask or one KN95, washing hands constantly, maintaining physical distancing, and taking care of the social bubble.

Out of that total, 21,599,655 were given as second dose.
