Peru: COVID-19 Omicron cases rise to 116, new cases detected in Lima and regions

The number of cases of infection with COVID-19's Omicron variant increased to 116 in Lima and some regions of Peru, Health Minister Hernando Cevallos reported on Wednesday.

During a press conference, the high-ranking official specified that 112 Omicron cases have been detected in Lima and Callao region, in addition to 3 cases in Sullana (Piura region) and 1 in Chimbote (Ancash region).

The Cabinet member said that, although the Delta variant remains the predominant one in Peru, the presence of Omicron continues to rise in the country.

Within this framework, the Government will impose New Year's curfew from 11:00 p.m. on December 31 until 4:00 a.m. on January 1 due to the increase in COVID-19 Omicron variant cases.

It also ordered the closure of beaches along the entire Peruvian coast on December 31 and January 1 with the aim of preventing crowds and reducing the risk of COVID-19 contagion during the long New Year holidays.
