Commenting on the increase in Omicron cases across the country, the General Director of the Directorate of Integrated Health Networks in Central Lima (DIRIS Lima Centro), Jesus Bonilla, reminded citizens that the booster dose (or third dose) helps prevent the spread of COVID-19 and severe symptoms of the disease.

"Dear citizens, keep in mind that the third dose (of the COVID-19 vaccine) is essential to contain the third wave of the pandemic. We will be better protected if we complete our vaccine series," he said.

His remarks were delivered during an event held at a vaccination center in Lima's Jesus Maria district on Sunday, December 26, which saw an increase in attendance of vaccine recipients.

According to Bonilla, although 80% of the target population within the DIRIS Lima Centro area has received the two doses, the next goal is to continue expanding the coverage of the booster dose, which is given three months after the second shot.

"More than 80% of the target population in Lima Centro has been vaccinated with two doses. This fills us with enthusiasm; however, there is still a long way to go. Bear in mind that the rollout for the third dose is currently underway and we are going through a fundamental process," he stated.

The event also saw the presence of Culture Minister Gisela Ortiz, who received the booster dose of the vaccine and highlighted the need for the population to get complete protection against the virus.

"In addition to getting the booster dose, we all need to take care of one another. We have a collective responsibility as citizens to adhere to preventive measures such as wearing a mask, observing social distancing, and hand washing," she remarked.

The Cabinet chief affirmed that the booster vaccine (third dose) is extremely important for people to be able to protect themselves from the Omicron variant.
