The Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, which opened today and take place from July 23 to August 8 in the midst of the global COVID-19 pandemic, is attended by Peru whose athletes will begin to fight for the long-awaited medals.

The Inca delegation —which has already marched at the opening ceremony of the Tokyo 2020 Games— is made up of 35 athletes, who qualified directly and due to their own merits to the highest sports competition around the world.

In this edition, Peru had the outstanding surfers Daniella Rosas and Lucca Mesinas as flag bearers at the aforementioned ceremony.

Our country has 35 athletes qualified for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

The current national delegation is so far the largest in the 21st century, surpassing the 29 athletes who had attended Rio 2016, thus stressing that the qualifications are individual and not in team sports.

It is important to note that Peruvians arrive in Japan with the fourth largest delegation in 120 years of Olympic participation: Berlin 1936 (40 participants, including the soccer delegation), London 1948 (41 athletes), and Los Angeles 1984 (35 athletes).

The athletes belong to the Peruvian Sports Institute's (IPD) Athlete Support Program and the Vamos con Tokio (Let's Go with Tokyo) Program, which grant financial subsidies to high-performance athletes qualified for the Olympics.
