A total of 362,967 foreign and domestic tourists visited the six museums in the history-rich region of Lambayeque, northern Peru, in 2012.

Jorge Centurion, head of the Naylamp-Lambayeque archaeological project, was very pleased with the results and said this year's goal is to exceed that number.

As in previous years, the Royal Tombs of Sipan museum (pictured) was the region's most popular museum in 2012, with 184,665 Peruvian and foreign visitors.

"It [Royal Tombs of Sipan] is the main museum and a cultural landmark of our department. This year it has prepared a series of educational activities for all ages," Centurion added.

According to official statistics, the Brüning museum was the second most popular choice with a total of 38,484 visitors, 35,530 of whom were Peruvians.

It was followed by the Sicán museum with 35,204 people; the Túcume site museum, 53,142; Huaca Rajada-Sipán, 48,094; and Chotuna-Chornancap, 3,378.
