FA Ministers of Peru and Japan express commitment to strengthening strategic partnership

Peruvian Foreign Affairs Minister Javier Gonzalez-Olaechea met with Japanese counterpart, Yoko Kamikawa, to whom he reiterated satisfaction over the commemoration of the 150th anniversary of diplomatic relations (1873-2023).

He also highlighted the good moment these relations are going through.

Both officials expressed the commitment of the Foreign Affairs Ministries of Peru and Japan to the roadmap agreed upon by President Dina Boluarte and Prime Minister Fumio Kishida last August, aimed at strengthening and deepening the Strategic Partnership, as well as the wish to include new areas of cooperation.

Minister Gonzalez-Olaechea invited Japan to expand its investments in Peru, placing emphasis on infrastructure and mining projects.

Similarly, the Peruvian government official highlighted our country's sound and modern legal framework that protects and promotes investments, which includes the Economic Partnership and Double Taxation Agreements, plus the CPTPP.


Furthermore, Gonzalez-Olaechea underlined the important role of the Nikkei community in Peru and of the Peruvian community in Japan, reiterating the importance of the 1972 bilateral agreement on visa waiver.

Moreover, they discussed the administrative and institutional status of this bloc, whose General Secretariat is located in Singapore.



At their meeting, both officials highlighted the excellent state of the bilateral relationship, evidenced in the continuous high-level dialogue between Peru and Chile throughout the year.

Thus, the ministers highlighted the upcoming start of the Peruvian Presidency at the APEC forum and the handover of the Pacific Alliance Pro-Tempore Presidency from Peru to Chile in 2024.

Likewise, they addressed the main issues on the bilateral and regional agenda.



The two authorities reaffirmed their agreements in the defense and protection of human rights and democracy, as well as the respect for international law.

The dignitaries also talked about priority issues on the bilateral agenda, such as the strengthening of cooperation on migratory issues, security, and against illicit drug trafficking, as well as the deepening of economic relations.

In this sense, they agreed to begin works to hold the first meeting of High-Level Political Dialogue Mechanism between both countries in 2024.

Foreign Affairs Minister Gonzalez-Olaechea and U.S. Secretary of State Blinken highlighted the importance of the handover of the APEC Presidency to Peru and the joint work that both economies carry out in this bloc.

Finally, within the framework of a complex international situation, both authorities discussed topics of interest on the regional and international agenda.
