Peruvian Foreign Affairs Minister Javier Gonzalez-Olaechea affirmed that his sector and other competent State agencies are working expeditiously so as not to affect the flow of Mexican tourists coming to Peru.

These remarks were delivered on Monday in an interview with Canal N, following the recent official announcement of the visa requirement for Mexican citizens seeking to visit Peru.

On the matter, the Cabinet member emphasized that this measure responds to the principle of reciprocity after Mexico unilaterally decided to require visas for Peruvian nationals.

"We have applied the reciprocity, which is a diplomatic practice, but we have assessed and reflected on it. This means that reciprocity shall be applied on one side, but the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and other State organizations are working expeditiously in order not to affect incoming tourism, so that Mexicans can flow and visit Peru," the minister stated.

According to Gonzalez-Olaechea, around 7,000 Mexican tourists visit Peru each month, which is why the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is speeding up the procedures so that Mexican citizens can obtain the visa in an electronic format.

He also referred to the statements made by the head of political affairs at the Mexican diplomatic mission in Peru, Adolfo Zepeda, regarding the temporary nature of the measure, noting that neither the conditions nor the deadline for the implementation of the visa —for Peruvian nationals wishing to enter Mexico— have been announced.

"On the other hand, Mexico states that it (the measure) is temporary, but neither the term nor the conditions have been set, or even announced (…). I wonder if the measure may be revised and discussed," the government official expressed.
