Peruvian president Alan García, holds a meeting with former US president Jimmy Carter, -head of the Carter Center-, who yesterday started a visit to Peru.

The 39th President of the United States would be staying in Lima until May 1, at which time he will travel to Bolivia. The meeting held at the Government Palace started at 09:10 hours (14:10 GMT), when the former president arrived.

During his stay in Peru, Carter is to take part in the Americas Regional Conference, which is being held at a hotel in the Limean district of Miraflores and is dealing with topics such as the right to access information.

The former US president will also be awarded a medal for his renowned work on promoting and defending constitutional order as well as fostering respect for human rights.

This ceremony is to be held at the National Library in San Borja and has been held in Peru for four consecutive years. Recipients in the past have included Mario Vargas Llosa, Salomón Lerner, Father Gustavo Gutiérrez, Mother Covadonga and Pilar Coll.

Nobel Peace Prize recipient Jimmy Carter ruled the United States since January 20 1977 to January 20 1981.
