The President of the Republic, Keiko Fujimori, has arrived in the Piura region to oversee the establishment of the "Los Algarrobos" temporary shelter and a field hospital. This is part of the government’s efforts to provide assistance to families affected by heavy rains and to strengthen the healthcare system’s response capacity in the face of the El Niño phenomenon.
On this, her 29th official working trip, the President is accompanied by the Minister of Health, Luis Dyer; the Minister of Agrarian Development and Irrigation, Marco Vinelli; and the Minister of Defense, Rafael Belaunde.
Also present are the Regional Governor of Piura, Luis Neyra, along with local and health authorities, with whom she will coordinate interventions designed to ensure a timely response to emergencies caused by El Niño.
During her first engagement in the region, the Head of State will inspect the "Los Algarrobos" temporary shelter—located at the "Reverendo Padre Alberto Álvarez Good" Municipal Coliseum—where she will review the setup of tents intended to provide housing and protection for affected families.
This infrastructure is part of the emergency response measures, aimed at ensuring that those affected have access to safe, habitable spaces, as well as adequate supplies and basic services.
This intervention takes place as all eight provinces and 65 districts of Piura have been declared to be in a state of emergency due to the imminent danger posed by heavy rainfall linked to the El Niño phenomenon.
Field hospital
Following this, President Fujimori will oversee the setup of a field hospital at the "Jesús Nazareno" Special Basic Education Center (CEBE), located in the Veintiséis de Octubre district of Piura. The facility will expand the region’s care capacity in anticipation of a potential surge in patients due to the El Niño phenomenon.
The hospital will feature 115 clinical beds and 30 rehydration beds, as well as an intermediate care unit, two triage areas, and two shock-trauma areas. Care will be provided by physicians, nurses, and healthcare technicians. The Romero Foundation will contribute medical equipment and infrastructure improvements.
The initiative is being carried out in collaboration with the Regional Health Directorate (Diresa) and the Regional Education Directorate (DRE) of Piura, in coordination with the Ministry of Health (Minsa).
The field hospital is expected to provide 3,000 consultations per month, totaling 15,000 consultations over its five months of operation.
As part of the preparations for El Niño, Piura has 323 active health responders and five advanced medical posts. Additionally, seven healthcare facilities have been identified to bolster care should demand increase.
