Former US President and Nobel Peace Prize winner Jimmy Carter arrives Wednesday afternoon in Lima, Peru, as part of a working tour he is carrying out in several Latin America countries.

The Carter Center's representative in Peru, Luis Nunes, told Andina news agency that the former US president will stay in Lima until May 1st, when he will travel to Bolivia.

During his stay in Peru, the former president will participate in the Americas Regional Conference on the Right of Access to Information, an event organized in collaboration with the Organization of American States (OAS), the Andean Judicial Commission, and the Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas.

The Americas Regional Conference is being held at a hotel in the Limean district of Miraflores from April 28 to 30 and is attended by over 100 government, civil society, media, and academic representatives from 17 countries.

On Thursday, Carter will receive a human rights award from the ombudsman’s office in recognition of his outstanding work in promotion, protection and consolidation of the constitutional order, democratic institutions and respect for human rights.

The award ceremony, which will be chaired by ombudswoman Beatriz Merino, will be held at noon at the National Library auditorium in the district of San Borja.
