The Minister of Economy and Finance (MEF), Elmer Cuba, confirmed today that public holidays falling between Tuesday and Friday will be moved to the Monday of that same week. This measure will take effect starting next year.

"It has been decided to move public holidays to Mondays. Any holiday that falls between Tuesday and Friday will be shifted to Monday, so that it does not cause as much disruption as a mid-week holiday," Cuba said in an interview with RPP.

The minister noted that this decision follows the introduction of three new public holidays by the previous Executive branch and the Congress of the Republic (2021–2026 term).

He explained that adding more holidays to the annual calendar does not have a positive impact on the economy, as it only benefits the formal sector—which is relatively small in the country.

"During the last presidential and congressional term, three new public holidays were introduced. This is counterproductive for productivity and income—especially for the vast majority of Peruvians who do not enjoy this benefit because they work in the informal sector. In fact, for them, such a day simply means a loss of sales, as they work every single day," he stated.

Elmer Cuba also affirmed that the current government’s "long-term goal" is to reduce the number of public holidays, though he did not specify which ones might be eliminated.

It is worth noting that the Minister of Economy and Finance had previously signaled the Executive branch's intention to implement changes regarding public holidays.

Last August, the head of the MEF highlighted that this measure would also benefit the tourism sector, as businesses would have greater predictability when organizing their services and operations.
