U.S. backs renovation of Peruvian Police crime lab

09:12 | Callao (Callao region) Jun. 28.

Deputy Chief of Mission of the U.S. Embassy in Peru Mark Wells inaugurated the new Peruvian Police Crime Laboratory in Callao and donated 25 motorcycles to the law enforcement institution.

So far, the U.S. Government has contributed US$2.1 million to the Callao police jurisdiction.

The opening and donation ceremony featured Interior Minister Carlos Moran, National Police Commander-General Jose Luis Lavalle, Callao Jurisdiction's Chief of Police Edgardo Garrido, local authorities, and representatives of neighborhood committees.

"These new facilities —endowed with high-tech equipment— will enable police officers to provide rapid response when implementing and enforcing the law," Wells said in his speech.

"We foresee this crime lab will help the Peruvian National Police (PNP) and justice administrators handle and process forensic evidence —found at crime scenes— effectively," he added.

According to the official, the laboratory will improve crime investigation work through newly established units, such as forensic biology and chemistry, toxicology, graphology, and ballistics.

"Our operational support to the PNP was made possible thanks to the program 'Model Police Stations' of the Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs Section at the U.S. Embassy in Peru, implemented in conjunction with five police stations in Callao," Wells expressed.
