Peru President pledges full support to police in fight against crime

12:04 | Lima, Dec. 4.

Peruvian President Martin Vizcarra on Tuesday affirmed that the National Police and its members rely on Government's support in the fight against crime and to restore the principle of authority throughout the national territory.

In his speech at a ceremony marking the 30th foundation anniversary of the National Police, the Head of State stressed the need to act firmly and in line with the law in order to stop delinquency and crime in all its forms.

"A zero-tolerance approach towards those who act outside the law and threaten the peace of citizens. You can count on the full support of the Government to restore the principle of authority across the territory," the Peruvian leader told those attending the ceremony.

"The population deserves to live in peace, and we have to ensure this fundamental right," he added.

Since its establishment —at the time of independence— the police has fulfilled its mission to provide security for Peruvian citizens, reinforce the internal order, and contribute to the country's development while building a culture of peace and respect for human rights.

Such a mission has been accomplished not only during the glorious periods in the country's history but in the most difficult times, like the fight against subversion.

For example, he emphasized the police's decisive role in the capture of Shining Path terror group leader Abimael Guzman and the defeat of terrorism.

Likewise, Vizcarra recalled police officers have one of the most sensitive and risky jobs.

In this sense, he paid special tribute to Javier Chaupis and Jose Pacheco —law enforcement agents who were murdered by criminals while performing their duties.

"Neither you nor your families will be ignored by my administration," he commented.
