Being just a few meters away from the vehicle that will transport one of the most influential figures on the planet evokes a unique combination of responsibility and human awe.

At the Apostolic Nunciature headquarters in Lima, the adapted Popemobile that will accompany the Holy Father, Pope Leo XIV, during his apostolic visit to Peru, scheduled for November 11–16, was blessed recently.

The blessing took place during an official presentation held by General Motors, together with the Apostolic Nunciature and the Peruvian Episcopal Conference.

Once the protective cover is removed, what immediately catches the eye is its finish: the pickup truck is entirely white—an immaculate shade that conveys a sense of peace, simplicity, and purity.

However, its physical presence is imposing.

With the special cabin installed, the structure stands approximately 4 meters tall and weighs close to 3 tons, rising as a sober yet majestic presence in the middle of the main courtyard.

A bridge of faith and eye contact

A Popemobile goes beyond the traditional function of a means of transportation.

During the unveiling ceremony, Church authorities emphasized that the vehicle serves a fundamentally spiritual and social purpose: it is designed to bring the Holy Father closer to millions of people, allowing him to greet the faithful, look them in the eye, and bless them along his route.

During the presentation, officials announced that the Popemobile will make its way along Lima's La Marina and Brasil Avenues, transporting His Holiness to various events scheduled in the capital.

Meanwhile, in Lambayeque region, the Supreme Pontiff will use it to reach the Pampas de Pimentel, where he will celebrate Mass before a large crowd.

During the coverage, one technical detail caught journalists' attention: the vehicle is not equipped with bulletproof armor.

Far from being a logistical oversight, it was revealed that Pope Leo XIV himself specifically requested that additional protective glass panels be omitted, as a clear gesture of his deep trust in and confidence in the Peruvian people's affection.

"The Holy Father is returning to see his family, which is Peru and the Peruvian people, so that is why there is no need for him to be shielded," Apostolic Nuncio to Peru Archbishop Paolo Rocco Gualtieri stated.

The Popemobile's technical specifications

Examining the vehicle from a technical perspective, the Popemobile was built on the Chevrolet Colorado pickup truck platform, manufactured at General Motors' plant in São José dos Campos, Brazil, and modified by specialized company Engesig.

Its structural and functional transformation was completed in a record 24 days.

Mechanically, the pickup truck is equipped with a 2.8-liter turbo-diesel engine delivering 204 horsepower and 510 Nm of torque.

Its four-wheel-drive system, combined with an eight-speed automatic transmission and a refined suspension system, ensures smooth travel across Peru's diverse terrain.

Regarding the support team's safety, the model retains six airbags and advanced electronic driver-assistance systems.

Designed to transport the Pope in comfort

The rear cargo area was fitted with a flat, carpeted floor on which the papal chair and two seats for his official companions are secured.

With journeys in which the Pope will be standing in mind, safety handrails and perimeter support bars were installed.

The vehicle also features a retractable rear access stairway system, a modified roof that allows direct communication with the driver, and a removable cabin with transparent panels that safeguards His Holiness from the wind without obstructing his view of the crowds.

Coordinated transportation to various cities

A total of two Chevrolet Popemobiles have been prepared.

The first will be assigned to official activities in Lima and Cusco, while the second will handle scheduled trips to Chiclayo and Pucallpa.

To transport the delegation and provide backup in case of adverse weather conditions, the fleet will be reinforced with eight Chevrolet Traverse SUVs.

Witnessing the symbolic handover of the vehicle to Monsignor Paolo Rocco Gualtieri, Apostolic Nuncio to Peru, left the impression that preparations for Pope Leo XIV's arrival have entered their final phase.

Once the Holy Father's tour is over, both Popemobiles will be displayed for a time at Chevrolet dealerships in Lima before being permanently donated to the Apostolic Nunciature.
