President: Peru has come out ahead, this time won't be exception

11:37 | Lima, Jul. 28.

Peru's President Martin Vizcarra on Tuesday highlighted that the nation has always come out ahead and assured that this time will not be the exception.

The Head of State recalled that —so far during his term in office— his administration faced complex situations such as the political crisis, corruption, the audios of shame, and the governance crisis "that forced us to constitutionally dissolve Congress (…)."

The political crisis, he said, called into question the democratic continuity and posed the challenge of leading and guaranteeing an orderly, as well as peaceful transition, where "there is no room for experimentation or authoritarian temptations."

"The circumstance of resignation of a president should be channeled through the constitutional way, and it was done so. I took office (in March 2018) to complete the term of government (in 2021), not to take advantage of an opportunity to attempt to stay in power," he stated.

In addition, the statesman pointed out that the corruption crisis exposed one of the worst scourges of our society and affected institutionalism, as well as the morals of Peruvians, but it was responded to in a firm and energetic manner.

The response was based on a frontal fight against corruption and a set of reforms to fundamentally transform the institutions, which was later strongly supported at the polls in a referendum.
