Peru PM: Fight against corruption has been and continues to be a Govt commitment

13:48 | Lima, May. 28.

Peru's Prime Minister Vicente Zeballos on Thursday affirmed that the fight against corruption has been and continues to be a permanent commitment of the Government that is not merely words but actions.

The aim has always been that people who have committed corruption offenses should assume their responsibility, no matter their rank or position.

In this sense, the Cabinet chief explained that —during the parliamentary interregnum— he found out that conflicts of interest lead to acts of corruption that interference negatively in the exercise of public functions.

For this reason, he said, an urgency decree was approved to broaden the scope of the obligation of public officials to present an Affidavit of Interest.

"In the past, this obligation was regulated by Supreme Decree and was binding only on the Executive Branch. This is a tool that empowers citizens so that they can participate and exercise active supervision over the integrity of public officials," Zeballos explained.

"It (the Affidavit of Interest) contains information on family, political, economic, commercial, professional and institutional ties, in order to help detect potential conflicts of interest," he added.

On this occasion, the President of the Council of Ministers arrived at Congress joined by Cabinet members to report on the actions of the Executive Branch and present the government's general policy.
