Peru leads international process to strengthen fight against corruption

00:03 | Lima, Jul. 24.

Peru began its role as co-facilitator in the negotiations aimed at crafting the Political Declaration to be adopted at the United Nations' Special Session of the General Assembly against Corruption (UNGASS 2021), which will take place on June 2-4 next year.

The Foreign Affairs Ministry reported that the document will be aimed at strengthening international cooperation and assistance in the context offered by the United Nations Convention against Corruption (UNCAC).

In addition, it will renew the commitment of States in the corresponding implementation to face the aforementioned scourge and its borderless transnational operations.

Peru's leadership in this process at the United Nations is a priority guideline for the South American country's foreign policy.

At the same time, it is consistent with the purpose of strengthening the multilateralism that Peru defends and whose need was requested in the face of the challenge that represents the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

The frontal and effective fight against corruption —a task that involves the public and private sectors plus society as a whole— is also a contribution towards the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals in the country.

UNGASS 2021 was an initiative promoted by Peru and Colombia and constitutes one of the most important international events in the fight against corruption, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs pointed out.

In 2003, the United Nations Convention against Corruption was adopted, thus being the only global instrument on the matter.
