Peru's President asks Congress to address plenary session on Nov 6

President Martin Vizcarra on Wednesday requested Congress to allow him to join a Parliament plenary session this Friday to exercise his defense against the presidential impeachment motion submitted by a sector of the Legislative Branch days ago.

In an official letter sent to Congress Chairman Manuel Merino, the Head of State requested him to reconsider the initial date set for the session, which had initially been scheduled for November 9.

The Head of State proposed that it be held on Friday in order not to hinder the ordinary plenary session to take place on Thursday.

"We consider it necessary to provide the country with a final decision on the authorities that will govern their destinies until July 28, 2021, the date on which the democratic transition of power will take place as a result of the general elections (on April 11, 2021), and not plunge the country into a situation of instability for a longer period," the document read.

Also, in the official letter, the statesman said that

having permanent presidential vacancies in process does not contribute to the political or economic stability. On the contrary, he stressed, it has the potential to affect investment and development.

"It seems important to us that this situation gets a final response from the Congress of the Republic in the shortest time possible to avoid prolonging the pernicious effects mentioned above," he added.

The document was signed by President Martin Vizcarra and Prime Minister Walter Martos.

According to the provisions of Congress, November 9 is the date on which the second impeachment motion will be debated. Its admission was approved last Monday.
