Peru's PM: Government to declare Lima in state of emergency in next hours

00:30 | Lima, Oct. 17.

Prime Minister Ernesto Alvarez announced that Lima will be placed under a state of emergency in the coming hours. Thus, a series of measures to combat crime will be enforced.

"I reiterate that Lima will be placed under a state of emergency in the coming hours, with all measures that may be implemented during this time, as well as fight crime and benefit citizens affected by common delinquency," Alvarez said in remarks to reporters on Thursday night.

The Cabinet chief emphasized that crime currently violates citizens' health, property, and quality of life.

Thus, President Jose Jeri instructed the corresponding technical teams to develop appropriate and intersectoral measures, Alvarez said.

Furthermore, the Prime Minister indicated that "at least Metropolitan Lima" will be placed under a state of emergency. Alvarez noted that this decision will not be merely declarative, as a full package of measures will be implemented.

At another point, the Cabinet chief stated that the current government firmly believes in human rights above any political trend, position, or ideology.

Furthermore, Alvarez lamented that violence occurred during Wednesday's demonstration in the capital's streets. He emphasized the need for a swift and thorough investigation into the death of a citizen, an event that, unfortunately, brings mourning to a Peruvian family.

The Prime Minister also underscored that the government's decision is to remain steadfast in the fight against crime and poverty, and to pursue the objectives set by the President of the Republic.

These include presenting a country with economic and political stability, while facing the challenge of holding general elections in a peaceful, moderate, pluralistic manner that respects opponents' ideas.
