Peruvian Prime Minister Violeta Bermudez on Friday reported that reduced capacity in closed places, as well as curfew, will remain in force to continue fighting the COVID-19 pandemic.

During a press conference, the high-ranking official explained that the Government seeks to strengthen the recovery of economic activities in a responsible manner. That is why it promotes open spaces as an alternative to economic, cultural, and social life.

"Differentiated capacity will be maintained in closed spaces, including temples, restaurants, and casinos, in accordance with risk levels. We will continue with curfew and weekend restrictions to limit mobility and reduce infections," she explained.

One year after the first COVID-19 case was detected in Peru, the Cabinet chief said that a responsible coexistence with the virus is necessary, which implies finding a balance between public health measures and family economy.

"Strict quarantines and the closure of activities have had a significant impact on the loss of jobs (…) in the second half of 2020, plunging thousands of people and families into poverty. Besides, these forced them (families) to seek jobs in unsuitable conditions, increasing informality rates which pose greater health risk, and which at the end of 2020 reached 75.3%," she expressed.

"Yes, it is possible to agree on preventive measures that are consistent with public health and family economy, and the Government works responsibly to achieve this goal," she insisted.

Therefore, Bermudez indicated, a deep citizen commitment is required, as well as that from all micro-entrepreneurs who do their best to implement biosafety protocols in order to protect the workforce and their clients.

In addition, the Prime Minister reminded citizens that face masks will be considered a public good and will be distributed for free among the vulnerable sectors.
