Peruvian Foreign Affairs Minister Mario Lopez on Wednesday affirmed that the vaccine against COVID-19 constitutes a national objective.

Joined by Health Minister Pilar Mazzetti, the diplomat welcomed the Chinese scientific delegation that has brought the first Phase 3 clinical trial vaccine batch, prepared by Sinopharm laboratory.

The clinical trials will see 6,000 previously-registered volunteers supported by medical teams and specialists from Lima-based Cayetano Heredia and San Marcos Universities, in coordination with the foreign scientific delegation.

In a press release, the Foreign Affairs Ministry highlighted the positioning of the aforementioned Chinese laboratory —in the field of research as well as production of vaccines and drugs— as one of the leading companies in the pharmaceutical industry, globally speaking.

The application of tests will be divided into two groups, one for each university. These clinical trials are made up of Wuhan and Beijing strains and placebos.

The registration of the remaining 3,000 volunteers in charge of San Marco University is scheduled to take place shortly.
