President: Bringing COVID-19 vaccine to Peru is a national goal

The President of the Republic Martin Vizcarra on Tuesday affirmed that bringing the vaccine against COVID-19 to Peru —once it is discovered— is a national goal, adding that external efforts are being undertaken to achieve it.

Within this framework, the

Head of State expressed deep gratitude to doctors, nurses, technicians, and other members of the health system, "for being on the front line of the battle."

"Bringing the COVID-19 vaccine —as soon as it is available— is a national goal. Therefore, we created the multisectoral commission for coordination and articulation of actions to access the development, production, acquisition, donation, and distribution of vaccines against COVID-19," he expressed.

The top official announced that external efforts will be multiplied in the bilateral and multilateral spheres so that Peru can have access to the eventual vaccine and treatment against this disease "and that it will be declared a universal public good."

The statesman also mentioned that young Peruvian experts and scientists proved that —in the midst of adversity— science and research can be done in the country.

"To date, we have at least eight initiatives for technological innovation, epidemiological surveillance, molecular testing, and mechanical ventilators, all produced in the country," he added.

President Vizcarra made these remarks during

his Annual Address to the Nation on the occasion of Peru's 199th Independence Anniversary.
