Trade volume between Peru and China exceeded US$37 billion in 2021, which meant an expansion of 60% over the previous year; this figure also accounts for one third of Peru's total trade volume, Ambassador of the People's Republic of China to Peru Liang Yu has affirmed.

Exports

The diplomat commented that China remains Peru's top trading partner, the main export market, the most important source of investment for eight consecutive years, and there is always a surplus for the Peruvian side.

"China is the main importer of key Peruvian products such as copper and fishmeal and accounts for (receives) approximately 50% of Peru's mining and fishery product exports," he asserted.

The Chinese envoy commented that shipments of various agricultural products from Peru to the Asian Giant experienced a very rapid growth, as is the case of blueberries and avocados, which managed to increase by 71% and 81%, respectively, compared to the previous year, displacing Chile as the largest exporter of both products to China.

"On the other hand, China manufactures cell phones, cars, garment, and other good quality products at reasonable prices, which improves the quality of life and reduces the expenses of Peruvians," he indicated.

Investments

Liang Yu commented that China's investment in the South American country exceeded US$30 billion, thus turning Peru into the second largest investment destination for the Asian Giant in Latin America.

"Approximately 200 Chinese companies have invested in Peru in sectors such as mining, energy, electricity, transportation, communications, and finance, among others, thus making great contributions to the development of Peru and the improvement of its people's (quality of) life," he expressed.

The Chinese ambassador said that, with a view to the future of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, both countries share a deep traditional friendship and the same tasks towards development. Besides, they are highly complementary in the economic field.

"Peru and China are destined to become the most important and closest cooperation partners. As China develops, its population of 1.4 billion will increase the demand for Peruvian products in an accelerated manner. Thus, trade volume between China and Peru is projected to account for more than half of Peru's total foreign trade," he explained.

Furthermore, the ambassador said that Chinese construction companies will help Peru build highways, railways, bridges, ports, airports, 5G and 6G networks, as well as smart and safe cities in the shortest possible time.

"China will promote faster and better-quality development of its close brother, Peru. The shared future community of China and Peru will form a solid part in the shared future community for humanity," he pointed out.
