Peru's Exports and Tourism Promotion Board (PromPeru) has been implementing various actions to promote national exportable supply in the attractive Chinese market.
Such actions contribute to the growth of exports of products like avocados, blueberries, quinoa, coffee, marine products such as shrimp and giant squid, wood flooring, alpaca dolls, as well as garments and accessories made of this fine fiber.
PromPeru reported that the actions to promote Peruvian coffee in said market —implemented through trade offices abroad— began in 2018 through inverse missions to Peru: samples, coffee tastings, seminars, and live broadcasts aimed at the final public.
As a result, shipments of Peruvian coffee to China increased significantly from US$468,329 in 2018 to US$1.7 million in 2021.
Moreover, in 2021, Peruvian specialty coffee joined the e-commerce platform Chunbo in order to expand its entry into the Chinese market.
Quinoa and alpaca
The government agency highlighted the rise in exports of quinoa and alpaca toys to China, where foreign sales of this precious grain totaled US$3 million in the first three quarters of 2021, which represented an increase of 193%.
Meanwhile, exports of alpaca toys grew from US$8,612 to US$233,630.
Actions were taken in both cases, including promotional campaigns like
"Alpaca del Peru" (alpaca clothing, accessories, and toys), which were conducted throughout the year, both in digital and print formats, thus allowing Peru to reach almost 500,000 consumers, with a sales volume in the market of more than US$150,000.
