Peru to forbid entry of Nicolas Maduro's high-ranking officials, relatives

10:40 | Lima, Jan. 7.

Peruvian Foreign Affairs Minister Nestor Popolizio on Monday informed key members of Nicolas Maduro's administration in Venezuela, including their relatives, will not be allowed to enter the Inca country.

Likewise, the official announced he has sent a directive to the migrations office that will go into effect today.

According to him, this measure is part of the agreements adopted by Lima Group members to put international pressure aimed at condemning the democratic and humanitarian crisis existing in that nation.

Furthermore, the Foreign Affairs representative indicated Lima Group does not recognize the legitimacy of Nicolas Maduro's new government, scheduled to start on January 10.

Within this framework, Minister Popolizio confirmed Peru will not attend the swearing-in ceremony due to its illegitimacy

As is known, delegates of Lima Group held a meeting last Friday to agree on their stance

The declaration was approved by Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Costa Rica, Chile, Guatemala, Guyana, Honduras, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, and Saint Lucia.

In May 2018, Lima Group refused to recognize the legitimacy of Venezuelan elections as they failed to meet international standards of a democratic, free, fair, and transparent process.
