stated on Wednesday that the implementation of the Shore Power system at Callao Port's South Pier once again places Peru at the forefront of port services and strengthens its competitiveness within the global maritime transport chain.
"With DP World's investment and contribution, and through collaboration between the public and private sectors, Peru once again takes the lead," he said.
The government official indicated that the incorporation of this technology marks a new milestone for the country's port infrastructure.
Likewise, he noted that only around 3% of ports worldwide currently have this type of system.
"DP World is making the system known as Shore Power, or power from the shore, available to our port infrastructure. This technology is being used for the first time in Spanish America," he stated.
The minister explained that Shore Power allows vessels docking at the South Pier to connect directly to the terminal's electrical grid and shut down their auxiliary engines while at port.
Thus, vessels no longer burn fossil fuels while at the terminal, helping reduce consumption, pollutant emissions, and noise pollution, he added.
According to official information, operation of this system will prevent the annual release of more than 6,300 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e), as well as reduce emissions of nitrogen oxides, sulfur oxides, and particulate matter by more than 90%.
More competitive positioning in the region
"This significant contribution is not only a step toward modernizing port services, but also strengthens Peru's competitive position in the region and in the global maritime transport chain," Rey stressed.
Moreover, the minister highlighted the importance of the South Pier to Peru's port activity.
According to information provided at the event, the Callao Port handles nearly 90% of the country's containerized cargo, while the South Pier accounts for 60% of this cargo.
The terminal also has a 1,050-meter pier and can simultaneously handle three container ships of up to 400 meters in length and 21,000 TEUs.
