Peru's Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister Jaime Pomareda on Wednesday signed the Instrument of Accession to the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia (TAC).

The signing took place during the 52nd Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Foreign Ministers' Meeting (AMM) and Post Ministerial Conferences (PMCs) held in Bangkok.

This accord consolidates the Inca country's presence in a region hosting the most dynamic economies.

The meeting addressed issues related to the trade tensions between the United States and China, as well as the conflicts at the South China Sea.

ASEAN is composed of Myanmar, Brunei, Cambodia, the Philippines, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, and Viet Nam.

The abovementioned bloc has around 647 million habitants and intends to increase its combined GDP to US$4.7 billion by 2025, thus becoming the fourth major economy in the world.

TAC

The TAC contains principles on promoting and sustaining regional peace and stability that was originally signed by the five Founding Members of ASEAN in 1976.

It was subsequently open to all countries that have expressed their intent in enhancing their relations with ASEAN. With the inclusion of the Republic of Peru, the total number of High Contracting Parties to the TAC amounts to 38 Parties altogether, including all the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council.

The provisions of the TAC focus on the peaceful settlement of disputes and cooperation in areas of mutual interest.
