Peru President to call up reserve soldiers to strengthen patrolling activities

16:03 | Lima, Mar. 26.

Peruvian President Martin Vizcarra on Thursday announced an extraordinary call-up of the Army reserve to reinforce the patrolling activities carried out by the Armed Forces in a bid to enforce the provisions of the state of emergency declared due to the COVID-19 outbreak in the national territory.

In a statement made from the Government Palace, following a plenary session of the Council of Ministers, Mr. Vizcarra explained that the measure will last 60 days.

"We have decided to make an extraordinary call-up of the Army Organic Reserve, specifically those who graduated in 2018, 2019 and 2020, who total a little over 10,000 people, so as to enhance the patrolling and control activities efficiently carried out by our Armed Forces," he expressed.

The Head of State noted that the measure of extending the state of national emergency thru April 12 "must be met and aims to achieve the objective that we all want."

"It is unfair that while the majority of the population strictly complies with all measures, with considerable effort, a small percentage of the people put everyone's health at risk," he stated.

In this sense, the top official announced the establishment of a registry of offenders, aimed at those who fail to comply with the provisions of the state of emergency.

Remarks were made in a televised Address to the Nation, within the framework of a mandatory social isolation imposed to prevent the COVID-19 from further spreading in the South American country.

On this occasion, the President was joined by members of the Council of Ministers and other authorities. The event was held at the Government Palace in Lima.

Thursday marks the eleventh day of mandatory social isolation.
