Peru President requests regions, municipalities to comply with measures

14:05 | Lima, Mar. 21.

The President of the Republic Martin Vizcarra on Saturday afternoon urged regional and local governments to comply with the measures decreed by his administration aimed at stopping the coronavirus (COVID-19) contagion in Peru, and not to try to amend them.

Within this framework, the Head of State pointed out that all central government provisions are the result of analysis by experts on the matter, adding that what has worked in other countries —to curb the spread— has been considered here, too.

Likewise, the top official emphasized it is required that regional and local governments support the administration's regulations, and that they do not "change or amend" them at the discretion of each authority.

The statesman regretted that —in some regions— the state of emergency is not being taken seriously.

Mr. Vizcarra stressed that all citizens are obliged to comply with the provisions of the Executive Power. That includes all social strata, as well as foreigners based in the South American country.

A total of 8,256 people have been detained during the first six days of the measure.

On behalf of all citizens, the President also thanked the efforts undertaken by the Armed Forces to guarantee the safety of Peruvians, as he reaffirmed his full support to the State-run institution.

On this occasion, the President was joined by members of the Council of Ministers and other authorities. The event was held at the Government Palace in Lima.

Saturday marks the sixth day of mandatory social isolation decreed by the Government.
