The President of the Republic Pedro Castillo on Tuesday formalized an invitation to Parliament's recently-elected Chairman Jose Williams Zapata to hold a coordination and working meeting at the Government Palace with the aim of shaping a single national agenda that helps meet the population's need.

"Keeping my word, I extend the invitation for Peru to win," Mr. Castillo expressed on his official Twitter account.

Similarly, the top official invited the legislator to hold a coordination and working meeting at the Government Palace, subject to the availability of the new head of Parliament.

The document specifies that the call comes within the framework of the Government's General Policy that the Executive Branch has been promoting and the need to strengthen dialogue with the Legislative Branch so as to craft a single national agenda "always thinking about our democracy, the constitutional rule of law, and a better future for all Peruvians."

Last Monday, Avanza Pais (Go on Country) legislator Jose Williams Zapata was elected as the new Congress Chairman for the 2022-2023 term.

Thus, he joins lawmakers Martha Moyano as First Deputy Chairwoman, Digna Calle as Second Deputy Chairwoman, and Alejandro Muñante as Third Deputy Chairman.

Williams Zapata's List 5 obtained 67 votes, thus defeating Congressman Luis Aragon's List 3, which obtained 41 votes in the runoff.

Williams, a legislator for the region of Lima, is a retired Army general. He was the Head of the Joint Command of the Armed Forces and led the Chavin de Huantar operation, which ended the 1997 Japanese Embassy hostage crisis in Lima.

The new head of Parliament will replace Lady Camones, who was censured by Congress in a plenary session.
